Game 4: North Virginia Dodgers vs. Reno Stars
After 2 inning things looked bleak for the Stars, poor reads on the ball and big hit after big hit for the Dodger the Stars trailed 7-1. Bartek settles
down and gives the Stars 4.66 innings of work. The Stars continue to chip away and tie the game at 8 before falling behind 9-8 thru 6innings.
An 11 run inning fueled by 10 hits ignites the Stars as they never look back. Kerr, McDoniels and Gorsett all have big offensive days.
Johnston get a huge strikeout in releif in the top of the 5th, while Whitcomb gets a huge double play in the 7th to demoralize the Dodgers.

Game 5: Reno Stars vs. Sacramento Patriots
After securing a playoff spot the night before, this game had no meaning, but a win was on everyones mind.
We started off sluggish booting a few on D and not doing too much offensively, still we managed to to take a 7-5
lead which seemed to be enough until our pitching just ran out of gas, not wanting to use our pitching in a meaningless
game Tom Summy made his Arizona debut and pitched well enough for a win but it just didn't happen this game as the
Patroits win it on a bloop hit to right.

Game 7: Reno Stars vs. Seattle Rage
With pitching running thin Coach Arlitz was taking auditions for starting pitching. Sortino stepped up and said " I want the ball"! All he did was
throw his second complete game in a row. Seattle was no slouch with the bats, but Justin had enough to keep them off balance. Strong starting
pitching for Seattle was strong and kept the Stars at bay for 4 innings until the 5th when the Stars erupt for 8 runs out of no where. We add 2 in the 7th
before Bartek puts an exclamation point on the game with a mammoth shot to left center leaving Seattle in disbelief of what had happened from the
5th inning on. Schmidt has a big day at the plate going 3-3 but also making a diving, possible momentum changing, catch to the utter disamy of the Rage.
A complete team effort and gutty performance from Sortino.

Championship Game
San Diego Gamecasters vs. Reno Stars
Championship game. No pitching left, what to do? Sortino? What the heck, why not ride the gravy train.
didn't get the defensive help early as a tough sun made things difficult. Offensively the magic ran out as we couldn't put together a big rally.
We did chip away and kept it close, but San Diego answered all our threats and made no errors entroute to there win.

Arizona 07, the quest continues….
Entering our sixth tournament expectations where high going into Arizona. Our offenses and defense was all back for another attempt at the ring as was our pitching. We were set until some unfortunate events took place; we lost Brian Dudley to injury, Tim Reynolds and Ken Salazar to work conflicts. Still with these losses moral was high. I was able to get two pitchers from My Las Vegas team to join us and they both pitched well and made a difference.
The tournament has always been about pitching depth and defense. Our pitching was outstanding and defense stellar setting a team record of 16 double plays for the 8 games.
Offense was outstanding with with Randy Mcdoniels leading the offense with a 16 rbi’s and a .588 avg., Diegle was clutch again with big hit after big hit .464 avg. Bartek was solid with 2 big homeruns and a .357 avg. and Kenny Schmidt had an outstanding tournament providing leadership and productivity in the 10 hole getting on base 14 times in 20 plate appearances. Theres not one person on the team that did not provide a big hit at some point during the tournament. Randy McDoniels was awarded team MVP (player) for his efforts.
On the pitching side strong efforts from Drew Vertes, Steve Johnston and clutch outings by Chris Whitcomb were huge, but we couldn’t have gone far without the rubber arm of Justin Sortino. Sortino put together 4 solid outings including back to back to back starts finishing with 31 innings thrown in four day’s going 3-1 with a 4.06 era. For his effort he was voted MVP (pitcher) by the team.
The goal of this tournament is to win the ring, we’ve improved every year but the quest continues.
My job in putting this all together is to get the best players , pitchers and people and put a TEAM out on the field where the only thing everyone wants is to win. Using the quote
“ you can accomplish a lot if you don’t worry about who gets the credit”. I play and coach by these words. Everyone wants to be the hero, but the bottom line is wins and losses. During this tournament I tried to be fair and make all the right moves, did I? Who knows, I went with my gut feeling on a lot of things and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. That Championship game still eats at me. What could I have done differently?
Anyway, thanks again to everyone for your contributions to this years team. Special thanks to Tom Summy for making lots of phone calls over the course of the year and of course to Kenny Schmidt for his continued outstanding effort keeping the league available via the internet. He spends a lot of time and money.
Start planning now, check the dates on dugout.org and save your money.
The quest contiues……
Gary
